Competency Analysis Report - Media & Technology

There is a growing prevalence of using instructional technology such as computer-based training. These instructional media, supplementing the traditional army drill and practice methods, can bring about an engaging learning experience for the soldiers. The artifact involves using Adobe Captivate to create a computer-based training on the web. It demostrates my understanding of the instructional principles involved and the various technical skills such as storyboarding and web authoring skills that I have acquired.

Dr Vanessa Dennen's class on Development of Computer Courseware gave a brief but exciting glimpse on the use of media and technology to assist in the learning process. Aside from the use of Adobe Captivate program, we were also introduced to developing interactive courseware using Microsoft Power Point programs and online Web-based instructional modules. As a new starter who have not been exposed widely to such courseware tools, the course gave a good grasp of the concepts behind these programs and the need to align the courseware designs with sound instructional principles

I have always wanted to learn web design skills, and this was a good opportunity to do so. Moreover the skills were ingrained after using them to produce the web-based instruction. Knowing and applying these skills have increased the instructional media I can use to design and develop instruction.

I am mindful that though technology appears to be the main driver for students' learning, many research have shown that it is just but a tool to assist in learning. I agree with such research to the extent that any instruction must first be developed with systematic instructional analysis at the forefront. I think there is a tendency for practioners who are caught up with deadlines to resort to "reverse engineering process" where technology often appears to be the solution for the learning gap.

In the artifact presented here, you will find that in all courseware development, there remains the requirement of executing the front end analysis of audience, content, development of performance objectives, etc. before designing a relevant and effective courseware. I think analysis and the applications of instructional theories remains the key cornerstone of any effective courseware. I would guage myself to be moderately skilled in the principles of using media and technology aspects of learning but minimally skilled in the use of the specific programs.
