Competency Analysis Report - Design

Instructional principles are the foundation to any effective instructional design process. Through the design and development of a 30-minute print-based instructional module in the first semester, I gained an understanding of systematic instructional design and the importance of instructional principles and their effects on learning. The artifect selected for illustration is the Instructional Module on, "Identifying Military Symbols" was developed in Dr Bob Reiser's class, EME 5603 - Introduction to Systematic Instructional Design.

It was interesting to apply the ARCS model into the instructional module. Paying close scrutiny to "Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction", I found it useful to apply these categories throughout the instructions to ensure that the learner is engaged throughout the lesson. I was reminded that anybody can create content, but it takes a more detailed knowledge of instructional and learning theories to design instructions that will cause people to keep turning the pages!

I was excited with the applicability of Gagne's 9 events of instructions when I was applying it to the design and  development of the instructional module. I thought it gave a very systematic framework of designing an instructions that will assist the learner's cognitive process of picking up knowledge, skills or attitude.

The end product was no indication of the amount of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation work that went into the instructional module. Though it was only a 30-minute instructional module, the procedures prescribed in Dick, Carey & Carey's instructional module were comprehensive and practitioner-oriented. It really gave me a taste of instructional design work, from the designing stage right to the evaluation and revision stage.

I am currently serving my internship with the CNSTAR project headed by Dr Aubteen Darabi at Learning System Instititue. This opportunity presented me with real-life application of designing and developing seaport security course instructions. The opportunity to put what I have learnt in theory and out into practice, has increased my confidence to believe that I am moderately skilled with the principles of designing instructions
